World we dare to imagine post 1

There are a few ways that the world could be made a better place to live. I think that a greater emphasis on forgiveness and aid would help rather than punishment. What I mean by that is in our current approach, whenever political tensions or situations arise, the first instinct is to move towards retaliation. Even in major cities, there is a greater emphasis on punishing rather than rehabilitation and help for offenders. This turns into a bigger problem when your realize that there is misallocation of funds within the country so to also resolve that, I think that focusing more on rehabilitation and then generating new forms of revenue can help the world more than we are currently. An example that I can think of marijuana offenses. Instead of locking up offenders in jail for years on end, it's a better idea to legalize the substance and then taxing it to create a new form of revenue, effectively getting rid of illegal use of it and further complications that arise. Furthermore, this argument can be extended to other harmful substances where decriminalizing it allows its users to get the help that they need. I think that a greater emphasis on rehabilitation and help is necessary for the improvement of this world rather than punishment.

  1. Hey Ramneek! I totally agree that we need to focus on rehabilitation rather than punishment. While I do believe the legal system should condemn cruel behavior such as murder, the US legal system and attitude towards criminals have a long way to go. When I read your post, I immediately thought about US versus Norway prisons. In Norway, prisons or correctional facilities focus on maintaining custody of the offender and attempting to make them functioning members of society. Unlike the US, Norway prisons are considered one of the most effective and humane in the world. I believe adopting similar programs could be beneficial.

One suggestion I have is for you to think about feasible ways in which we can persuade politicians or other powerful groups to focus on rehabilitation instead of punishment and retaliation. Maybe starting at a smaller scale, such as introducing prisons focusing on rehab, to observe whether there are benefits can be a good place to start?

  2. Hey Ramneek, I really enjoyed reading your post! I think it is important to support our citizens who are incarcerated. If you have not already seen it, I would recommend watching the Netflix show "Unlocked." I have not finished it yet, but it proposes a very unique idea that I think has the potential to change our criminal justice system.
I think one place to start making the world a more supportive place would be to talk with people who have escaped the cycle of recidivism and see what was most helpful for them and what would have been nice to have while they were getting resettled.

  3. Hi Ramneek, I could not agree with you more. I believe that reformation, aid, and support are all necessary for helping people, rather than punishment. In Norway, their prison systems are designed to help prisoners learn how to become better members of society, something the United States is not as effective at. I believe supporting people in times of need is essential for getting those people out of their predicaments.
