Book 2 Post 2

I'd like to start by saying that I've been quite preoccupied lately, so I haven't had much time to read the book. I've been trying to get through it slowly, and I have picked up a few things. One of the few things that I did implement was listening to music. Abdaal talks about how the best way to be productive is to make a task fun, and he did it by listening to music. I have also been doing the same thing, and the song that works for me is "Light of the Seven" by Ramin Djawadi from Game of Thrones. The song does not have any lyrics, and the music is fantastic, so ever since I got back from spring break, I have had that playing on repeat.

The one thing that I will say is that this book is a stark difference from another productivity/self-help book that I've read, which is "Can't Hurt Me" by David Goggins. In the book, Goggins talks about his life story and how through sheer grit and determination, he was able to overcome some of the toughest things in life, like training to be a Marine. Abdaal begins by talking about how grit and determination failed for him when he was a junior doctor, so reading about these two polar opposite experiences made me wonder if rather than picking one system, it's better to adopt them both and apply them at different times.

In comparing these two books in my head, I think what I have come away with it is that it is also not just a matter of applying one philosophy over the other but actually have a yin and yang relationship. What I mean by that is in trying to have a productive work environment, it is important to gamify the experience like how Abdaal mentioned. In making the work you're doing into a game, it does end up making it easier to do the work but there is also some grit and determination involved. I hoped to have a new philosophy when I picked up this book but after reading through it, I think what I am learning is that figuring out what works for you when you work is more of an art than a science. And that what works for one person doesn't necessarily work for someone else.

  1. Hey Ramneek, its actually pretty funny I just read your post while listening to light of the seven myself completely coincidentally. I've been listening to music while I study for a while now and I definitely think movie, TV show, or video game scores work the best for me by far.

  2. Hey Ramneek! I often times find myself playing Game of Thrones music in the background when I am reading or studying. It does make for some pretty great ambiance!

  3. Hey Ramneek, super relatable! I also listen to movie soundtracks to study and completely agree with you that David Goggins book is much more different than Dr. Abdaal's book, but both equally effective.

  4. Hey Ramneek! I agree with your last paragraph a lot. I think the difference between what people take away from self-help books is the based on their own life experiences!

  5. Hey Ramneek! I really liked how you have started to take the things you have learned from the book any apply them to your life. I also liked how you compared this book with a previous book you read.

  6. Hey Ramneek, I listen to music all the time while working, so I will give "Light of the Seven" a listen next time I need a song. I will also take your advice and try to make work more into a game so it isn't as tedious.

  7. Hi Ramneek, love that you read Can't Hurt Me by David Goggins. I am a big fan of his work and love following his journey. A true athlete and a real mental fighter.
