Who I am

I come from a small sub-urban city fifteen minutes south of Stockton and an hour and a half east of San Francisco called Manteca. Before that I lived in Hayward, a city about thirty-five minutes south-east of San Francisco. Hayward is known as the 'Heart of the Bay' but it rarely feels that way and it certainly did not feel like it when I immigrated. I left Punjab, a state in the north-west of India, in 2012. My parents told me that we were moving so my older brother and I could have more opportunities and get a higher level of education than what was available to us in Punjab.

Beyond getting into college, there was no objective or goal that my parents had told me about. Whenever someone asked me what I would do after high school I told them I wanted to go to college and if they asked me what I would do, I told them business. But, no one hands you a business to run and thus I switched to computer science.

With the job market being as tough as it is, where I'm going is uncertain. But I am not particularly stressed about the uncertain. I know that my dad, my mother and my brother will be there to support me. I know that my brother and I will figure out a way to make a living that will not have my dad working for the rest of his life. Speaking of which, people say I look like my dad. My aunts tell me that I am a younger version of my dad. My friend's sister told me that I look like my dad. At the same time, I grew up in a different society and country than my parents. There is a greater influence of American culture on me than on my parents. This influence shows up in almost every way when it comes to making a decision on a house project or figuring out what to eat.

At the end of the day though, they are still my parents and I know that whatever I do in life, my parents would be proud of my brother and I. Being in college though, I have created expectations that I don't think were ever thrust upon me. I know that my parents want me to finish my degree but the only expectation that I have created for myself is that I want to help pay off the house that my parents bought a year and a half ago.

I think that this goal to pay off and help my parents retiring was inspired by David Goggins. He's a man that has a no bullshit attitude and I think that is what I aspire to have so that I can quickly help my parents retire.

I think a special connection to an animal that I have are Koalas. They end up rolling around and sleeping all day I think that's kind of something that I would like to do. Playing around all day, eating eucalyptus leaves is what Koalas do and although that isn't what I would like to do, some version of that is pretty fun.

I remember once climbing into a tree and getting stuck in it. I think that's about as much of an encounter I have had with a tree or a plant. On the flower end, I remember my dad planted these flowers that opened up like a dog. I called them dog flowers and I think I connected to them the most. They were pretty and fun to play with and just looked easy going; something that I see myself as. I would say I'm a light-hearted, easy going person and the dog flower. I just looked it up they are called Snapdragons.

  1. Hi Rameek, I really admire that you are trying to help your family, that is so amazing. I too love Koalas, fun fact, all Koalas have Chlamydia. Not saying you have Chlamydia but thought that was funny fun fact hahaha.

  2. Hey Ramneek, I love that you have a great family that supports you and that you want to support in return. I enjoyed reading about the flowers your dad planted. Do you know the species of plant? I am intrigued.

  3. Hi Ramneek, the story of getting stuck up in a tree is too relatable. One of my best buddies growing up got stuck 40 feet in the air behind my grandparents house and it took three hours for my grandfather to coax him down.
